Handel’s Messiah Festival 2008 is back for another year after being such a success the past two years. It takes place once again in Temple Bar, Dublin’s Cultural Quarter and all events are free, so come along from the 13th of April to the 18th and enjoy the celebrations of Handel, his music and its connection with Dublin.
About the festival…
The Handel’s Messiah Festival 2008 will be a glorious week of music. This will be the 3rd year of the festival after the first year in 2006 was such a success. The week will be jam packed full of Handel inspired events such as concerts, walks and children’s workshops.

Messiah was Handel’s most famous oratorio, and it is based on the Birth, Passion and Aftermath of the life of Jesus Christ. The popular chorus ‘Hallelujah’ is part of the Messiah. Messiah which means ‘Jesus’ was originally written to be played over Easter but over time it became tradition to play it during Advent, however this festival will happen to coincide with Easter.
The Messiah was completed in 24 days and was written in 1741. Just a year later in Neal’s Music Hall on Fishamble Street in Temple Bar, Dublin, Handel’s Messiah premiered for the first time and was very warmly received.
In 2008 there will be a special choral performance by Our Lady’s Choral Society to open this year’s Handel Festival. They will sing the most popular excerpts from Messiah and there will also be a special guest soloist, Eamonn Mulhall.

No tickets are required, just head to Temple Bar! The 2008 Handel Festival will take place over one jam-packed week in April beginning on Sunday 13th and finishing on Friday 18th.
